It is now one month after the release of the most popular polished turd in history.  Since Activision and Infinity Ward are interested in nothing other than numbers, let’s take a moment to examine some as they pertain to MW2 on the PC.

Gamasutra is reporting that Modern Warfare 2 has sold about 4.2 million units on the XBox 360 alone at this point, and claims a further 1.87 million sold for PS3.  The PC version has moved “nearly” 170,000 copies (not counting Steam or other digital distribution sites).

Let’s put this in perspective: CoD4 was released about the same time of the year as MW2 (November 6, 2007), and by the end of the year had sold 383,000 copies on the PC, also according to Gamasutra.  So with less than a month to go in 2009, MW2 has sold fewer than half the number of its predecessor.  I think we can safely assume that it’s not going to make up the 200,000+ difference in that amount of time.  If this isn’t used as an excuse for the shitty ports PC gamers are sure to endure from this point forward, I would be astonished.

It’s also worth taking a look at Xfire’s MW2 stats to see the steady decline in hours played.  That red line is headed steadily down down down — in the neighborhood of a 50% drop since release.

I knew MW2 wouldn’t have staying power, but after one month?  Yikes…
